PRIDE MONTH 2020

Hello everyone! I am back with another post! As many of you might know, June is Pride month. This month is a celebration of everyone in the LGBTQIA+ community. Why is the month of June dedicated to people from the LGBTQIA+ community you may ask?

In June of 1969 there was the Stonewall riot. The Stonewall Inn was a gay bar in New York City. They did not have many rights at the time, and they were treated horribly. Back then, men could be arrested for performing drag shows and women could be arrested if they were wearing less then three pieces of “feminine clothing”. The police would come in and search for people to arrest at the bar. People from the bar were so fed up with this unfair treatment, so they decided to rebel against the police.

June, 28, 1969, was the night of the Stonewall riots. This was the first night of many riots to come days after. At the Stonewall riot, it all started with a crowd throwing bottles at the police just outside of the bar on Christopher street in Greenwich Village. The protest became bigger and soon spreading to other parts of the city. For the next couple of days after that there were more and more protests throughout the city. Then a year later in 1970 the first official LGBTQIA+ parade started outside of Stonewall and went up Sixth Avenue. Later, June was officially

designated as pride month.

​ These protests remind me of the Black Lives Matter protests, in a sense that these protests do make a difference. Your voice can be heard by attending these protests!
